A dental implant is an artificial titanium tooth root that is placed into the jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Implants can replace a single tooth up to a full arch of teeth, which may have been extracted due to injury or disease. Implants are very durable, will last many years, and require the same "maintenance" as real teeth, including brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups.
Implants offer many dental benefits. They prevent the bone loss and gum recession that often accompany bridgework and dentures. Neighbouring teeth are not altered to support the implant as they are with a bridge, which is a significant long-term benefit to your oral health.
Implants may be considered a more appropriate alternative to fix the appearance of missing teeth than dentures, as they look and feel like your own teeth and offer the freedom from the worries about misplaced dentures and messy pastes and glues. They also facilitate proper chewing and increase self-confidence, as speech and appearance are often improved.
